Banner advertising still remains fairly popular, but is becoming replaced more and more by contextual advertisement (SEO / PPC) that is both relevant and targeted.
Use of banner advertisements
The thing to remember with banners, as with any form of advertising, is that each form of Internet marketing has its strengths and weaknesses.
Banner advertisements can be very useful in brand building. With a banner advertisement a company can be branded and advertised just by having an audience look at it. It is not necessarily needed to always have some type of user action take place afterwards. The banner in itself may be the action.
Banners can also have a much larger impact than contextual ads if it is integrated in an appealing and non-obtrusive way.
